The COYOTE series began in 2001 after I camped solo in my van at Joshua Tree National Park. As soon as evening came, the coyotes began to romp around the desert, the campsites, and on the large friendly boulders. Something from these sightings stirred me. After returning to my studio in Northern California, the coyotes emerged in paintings, as they do now and then. Years later, coyote appeared when my mind echoed chaos and peace simultaneously. From a balcony, I saw coyote stand near my car as it looked directly at it. It stood in the huge parking lot of the college campus where I taught, fearless in the night. Soon after, coyote appeared at 2am, near my downtown studio, and again at the Pacific Coast where we made eye contact. A recent encounter was after a photo shoot at Pyramid Lake, it stood close, still, and lingered to examine me. I’m never quite sure why coyote appears, it keeps me guessing. The coyote phenomenon in my art comes from a raw energy inside me, often with a sense of humor.
